Very large Louis XIII period hand carved oak coffer with inscribed year of 1631 from the village of Mortain in Normandy. Carved on three sides with original hand forged iron key entry. Symbolic, regional carvings of the period include an ibis and a serpent. Transformed in the 1920's to a large notary's desk with drawers on left side and drawers concealed behind a door on the right side. Multiple keys with working locks. Ideal as a hotel desk, kitchen island, shop counter, or library table.
