Very large 19th century black lacquer wooden tray dating to the period of Napoleon III, the first French ruler to travel to Asia. An ornately hand painted scene in gold chinoiserie features a grand procession in front of an imperial palace displayed on an unfurling Chinese scroll at the center of the tray. A double border of elegantly scrolled leaves form a perimeter around the central theme. A striking piece to be exhibited on a wall or tabletop easel, circa 1848-1870.
