A rare piece from a short period of time in French furniture making, this Charles X period mahogany marquetry chest features finely inlaid lemon wood outlining the facade and each drawer front of the piece. Intricately scrolled leaves in lemon wood inlay adorn each drawer front. The marquetry work of the upper and lower drawers are set apart with inlaid birds and suspended bells. With drawers of finely hand cut dovetail construction, four are fitted with working locks and keys. The fifth drawer was originally used to conceal the family silver or pistols and is hidden behind the lower apron. Finished with a Saint Anne marble top, this exceptional commode in pristine condition is unique for both its exquisite marquetry and its rarity. c. 1824-1830.
