Late nineteenth century hand carved walnut Lucerne lion resting on a shield. Latin inscription commemorates the Swiss guard who were all massacred protecting Louis XVI on the steps of the Palais des Tuileries on September 3, 1792. Swiss cross is carved on one side. c. 1890.
