Antique Highlight: Pump from Normandy

This week at French Metro Antiques, we are featuring this late nineteenth century cast iron water pump.

Nineteenth Century PumpThis piece was found on a farm in Normandy, France and has an aged blue painted patina. Originally standing in the center of a French village, this pump would have been used by the entire community to collect water for their homes for cooking, cleaning, etc. The village fountain was a focal point in France providing a meeting place for villagers to gather and exchange gossip.

Nineteenth Century PumpThis fountain here is detailed with a dolphin’s head at the spout, as well as flowers on the sides.

Nineteenth Century Pump

Originally it would have functioned by pumping the lever.

Nineteenth Century PumpAlthough this one no longer functions as a pump, it could easily be adapted to have water cycle through it as a fountain!
