This week at French Metro Antiques, we are featuring this late nineteenth century cast iron water pump.
This piece was found on a farm in Normandy, France and has an aged blue painted patina. Originally standing in the center of a French village, this pump would have been used by the entire community to collect water for their homes for cooking, cleaning, etc. The village fountain was a focal point in France providing a meeting place for villagers to gather and exchange gossip.
This fountain here is detailed with a dolphin’s head at the spout, as well as flowers on the sides.
Originally it would have functioned by pumping the lever.
Although this one no longer functions as a pump, it could easily be adapted to have water cycle through it as a fountain!
