May The Festivities Begin!

Our last day in the Perigord/Dordogne region was the highlight of our wandering through the Middle Ages this week. The ancient town of Eymet was throwing its 35th annual medieval festival. The four of us took on our feudal alter egos (vassals, merchantwoman, and a noble maiden) and joined in on all the festivities.

Paddling Down The Dordogne

Rainy Days and Wednesdays

It was a rainy day today which means we went antiquing! The great find of the day was this very large impressionist painting of Renoir’s home. The artist is Raymond Gaudet. The painting is c. 1880’s, and it is still in its original frame. Hurray for the rain!

Discovering the Perigord

Our local village of Castillones had its weekly market today. We stocked up on fresh fruit, more cheeses, sausages, pate. We are enjoying the simplicity of living in our little house in the Perigord.





We visited the Chateau of Beynac this afternoon. The medieval castles are everywhere in this region, and Harrison is a major medieval history buff. Let’s just say he is in his own private heaven this...

Discovering the Bastides

Many of the villages in the Perigord are designated as medieval bastides. They consist of a central square with a covered market area with shops and houses under arcades all around the square. We wandered through several bastide villages today.





One of them was all decked out with strings of flowers.





Another was sprinkled with large colored pencils. Modern art thrown into the medieval mix.

Le Grand Départ

Today we headed south along with the rest of France for August vacation. Just about all of France takes the month of August off and so “Le Grand Départ” takes place on August 1st. It just so happened our itinerary coincided with Le Grand Depart (The Great Departure).




After a seven hour drive, we arrived at our charming rental house in the Périgord region which lies east of Bordeaux.
